Charity Diner with Matt Hellyer

Following much advertising on the Southeast area newsgroup (facebook), and through the Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge internal media, the “Charity dinner with Matt Hellyer” finally took place at the Botley Masonic Centre on Friday the 27th of September.

The Provincial grandmaster, along with a mix of 76 Masons and non Masons, were seated for dinner. They were all treated to a wonderful selection of music, both military and non military, expertly delivered by the boys and girls of the Royal Marine Volunteer Cadet Corps Band. These young people are truly inspiring to watch and listen to.

For many, the main attraction of the evening was the chance to listen to Matt Hellyer, the guest speaker.
Matt spoke with pure passion, and at length, about the charity “The Pilgrim Bandits”, of which he is the current CEO. This charity provides help for military veterans.

Matt also spoke of some of his military experiences, gained whilst serving with the Special Air Service. For the non-military present, including myself, his entire talk was captivating. He is reported to have served for 30 years, completed more than 400 operations and been involved in every conflict over that period.  He is absolutely, a “Warrior”, and the drive and grit required for that, he now utilises for his charity. Matt is also the owner of a global security company.  Details of his charity may be found at https://www.pilgrimbandits.org/

The Worshipful Master of the Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge, Worshipful Brother Andy Castell asked one thing of those in attendance for the evening, “Dig deep Brethren, dig very deep”.

Money was raised through a raffle and the auctioning of several desirable items including a shirt from Portsmouth F.C, and a football from Southampton F.C, each signed by the current players. There was some lively “banter” surrounding these items! Particularly as supporters from each camp were present.
Andy Castell was not disappointed. The total raised on the night was £3,858.72.

£2,508.72 went to the Masonic Charitable Foundation, £1,200.00 went to the “Pilgrim bandits”, and £150.00 to the Royal Marine Volunteer Cadet Corps Band.

A great night was had by all present. Congratulations are due to the organisers of the event, not least Worshipful Brother Tony Williams of St Vincent Lodge 5295.
